Biomimicry means people learn from animals and nature to create new things

But ask the animals, and they will teach you,
or the birds in the sky, and they will tell you;
or speak to the earth, and it will teach you,
or let the fish in the sea inform you.
Which of all these does not know
that the hand of the Lord has done this?
In his hand is the life of every creature
and the breath of all mankind.

– Job 12: 7-10

We Love Learning from Nature!!! 🐞 πŸš—

Examples of Animal Homes

Solutions in Nature

🐚 Nautilus Shell β†’ Dome Homes

Nature uses curved shapes to make strong shells.

People copy this to build strong dome homes.

(Tenderhearts: Build your own dome home out of clay)
(Pioneer / Patriots: Sketch Roof design strength & Snow runoff, like pine branches.)

Solutions in Nature

🐦 Bird Nests β†’ Lightweight Structural Design

Animal idea: Birds weave flexible but strong nest structures.

Human Copy ➑️ Interwoven steel frameworks like the Beijing National Stadium

Strength with minimal material

Shock resistance

Efficient load distribution

🐜 Termite Mounds β†’ Passive Cooling Buildings

Animal idea: Termites build tall mounds with internal airflow tunnels.
Human Copy ➑️ Buildings with passive cooling systems (like the Eastgate Centre)

Strength with minimal material

Shock resistance

Efficient load distribution

Because Hot Air Rises: Chimney effect
Natural air circulation

Less reliance on HVAC

Energy savings

bio BLITZ !
(Our American Heritage Girls Troop got to enjoy a short “night hike” and in the 15-20 mins, we listened, looked, and noticed all the observations we could make!

We did not hear any owls or animals stirring on this night, probably due to the windy blustery weather earlier in the day. It had been in the 50-60’s the few days prior, but was just ramping down into much colder temperatures again this evening. As a result, most of the woods and meadow / pond area was still, with the exceptin f some canadian geese. we also has good visibility of silhouettes of tree branches against the lighter night sky, and could see various bark textures, lichen, and moss with out flashlights. We used the “TRUDDY system” as well as a “whisper only” rule to help keep quiet in case other animals were in the area.
What I would change next time: Use an assigned or gridded mapping system to give each group of girls/ leaders/ parents a specific area so there is not overlap in what we are counting or observing. (This could have pros or cons, and with a night hike it was fun to have everyone shine their flashlights to share what they were finding as well!) I might do two segments to the hike during BIOBLITZ event purposes. 1) keep in your allotted square areas to count. and then for the second half of our time: 2) share with the other groups what interesting things you’ve found.

Praise the Lord.
Praise the Lord from the heavens;
praise him in the heights above.
Praise him, all his angels;
praise him, all his heavenly hosts.
Praise him, sun and moon;
praise him, all you shining stars.
Praise him, you highest heavens
and you waters above the skies.
Let them praise the name of the Lord,
for at his command they were created,
and he established them for ever and everβ€”
he issued a decree that will never pass away.
Praise the Lord from the earth,
you great sea creatures and all ocean depths,
lightning and hail, snow and clouds,
stormy winds that do his bidding,
you mountains and all hills,
fruit trees and all cedars,
wild animals and all cattle,
small creatures and flying birds,
kings of the earth and all nations,
you princes and all rulers on earth,
young men and women,
old men and children.
Let them praise the name of the Lord,
for his name alone is exalted;
his splendor is above the earth and the heavens.
And he has raised up for his people a horn,
the praise of all his faithful servants,
of Israel, the people close to his heart.
Praise the Lord.
– Psalm 148 (NIV)
